philippa-mitchell-artistI trained as a surface designer and designed patterns and images for textiles and kitchenware for 10 years before my love of drawing, painting and making, took me back to experiment with my own ideas.
I started painting murals and working on community arts projects. Moving north to the Scottish Highlands, I retrained as a primary teacher, with a particular interest in creative learning and learning through art and the other expressive arts. When I reduced my teaching commitments to part-time, I became a director for a community art gallery in the Cairngorms National Park, whilst creating my own work in my spare time.
In 2016 I decided to return to painting full time. I now work from my studio at home near St Andrews, in Fife. I sell through various exhibitions and through this website – please use the contact form if you would like to know more, including prices.
I enjoy creating work inspired by the environment, the memories of it and my interactions with it. Each painting is a unique personal memory of a moment of time in a particular place. I am particularly drawn to the landscape of the Highlands, islands and coasts of Scotland and its wildlife, especially birds. I am currently working in oils, watercolour or mixed media, dabbling with print and planning to paint en plein air as much as possible.
