Jo is a potter living and working in Fife. She originally completed a degree in Jewellery and Silversmithing but after enrolling on a pottery course a number of years ago she became hooked. Inspired predominantly by nature, plants and birds provide a wealth of ideas with other influences coming from the simplicity of Scandinavian design and 50’s textiles.
"I love the immediacy of pottery. Marks made quickly, once fired, are preserved and can survive for thousands of years."
Jo likes to decorate her thrown pots using a technique called sgraffito. The pots are dipped in a layer of contrasting coloured clay slip and a pattern is scratched through to reveal the colour beneath. She also hand builds larger vessels which she finishes by highly polishing the clay with the back of a spoon. These are then smoke fired in smouldering sawdust which results in a unique pattern made by the smoke. This contrasts with her other pieces as the marks made are partly down to chance.
