Hello there! I’m Maki. I'm originally from Japan and moved to England in 1997. I live with my husband and our little girl in a small Yorkshire town, where my pottery studio is located.
Most of my work is hand-thrown stoneware. Whilst each piece is kept in a simple form to be functional, I love exploring within the surface decoration and colours.
My passion for tableware is strongly influenced by the food culture from my background. I’d like my work to be used in daily life and bring joy to your home.
I first studied ceramics back in 2000, followed by work experience with my late mentor / a studio potter David Constantine White in Mytholmroyd, West Yorkshire. Although I became an assistant of David’s studio for a while, my main career was a social support worker, specialising with people with learning difficulties and Autism.
I returned to clay during my BA study in 2009 - 2012, whilst working as a pottery workshop instructor at a local Arts & Crafts Centre / Social Enterprise for people with special needs. I set up my pottery studio in 2012, whilst continuing my teaching job.
I finally took a new venture, becoming a solely self-employed studio potter in June 2017.
